Teaching children

We provide the opportunity of volunteering to individuals and groups from around the world to teach our children and teenagers.

We have already been blessed with talented and enthusiastic volunteers from all over the world who have taught our children. We look forward to welcoming more to join us to continue our projects. We encourage anyone with a passion for teaching children to volunteer. We’re very flexible, so you can schedule your dates and the length of your stay for times that are most convenient for you.

If you want to get to know our children beforehand, you can exchange letters with them via email.

If you want to bring items for our children, we would suggest you choose clothing first, then books and supplies. Sweets will also cheer them up. Please ask us about specifics if you’re interested in offering clothing or books.

Classes

There are 26 children in our family and we have divided them into two groups for teaching. The first group is for children in 3rd grade or ages 10 and below, and the second group is for 4th grade or ages 10 and above.

Subjects you can teach and curriculum

Our fundamental goal is to teach the children English language skills appropriate for their grade level through our basic and secondary courses, including math and science. They will also receive instruction in additional courses as we believe in offering a wide range of curriculum choices.

We place an emphasis on the children learning English because it is an international language, as well as a language recognized throughout Nepal. Having a solid foundation in English is useful for furthering educational opportunities and can help the children successfully obtain work in the future.

Class preparation

You must dress in conservative, appropriate attire while with the children.

Large tattoos should be covered and body piercings should not be visible (except for in ear lobes or nose). Come prepared to teach. Lesson plans should be made prior to arriving for class.

What hours volunteers can expect to work

  • 3:30 to 7:00 pm are the usual hours.
  • 3:00 to 7:00 pm in the summer.

More hours may be scheduled over holidays.

Teaching assistance

Normally, one volunteer is assigned to teach one group of children. If required, we will assign one Nepali speaking guide to assist you for ease of teaching if the volunteer is a non-Nepali language speaker.

Why we prefer international volunteers

Volunteers from around the world are a very effective source of inspiration for our kids to further their education. Our children are excited to talk to and learn from teachers that come from localities other than their own.

Volunteer’s role

From our experience we know that the children become excited and want to be closer to the volunteers. As such, it is not uncommon to see them talking to each other and making a noises sometimes. As a teacher, you must be tolerant and not show any threatening or angry behavior towards the children. All we expect from volunteers is love and compassion towards them.
